While You Were Sleeping

While you were sleeping I dreamed you met me on the clouds
We danced across the sky, and our laughter rained down.

While you were sleeping I dreamed we sat on top of the moon.
We swapped talk of cows and spoons, and our voices shot stars.

While you were sleeping I dreamed we floated in the ocean
We sang with the mermaids, and our song made men drown.

While you were sleeping, I dreamed I’d wake up in your arms.
I opened my eyes come morning, and yours stared back.

You asked if I remembered our dance in the clouds, and the rain.
You asked if I could recall our talk of cows and spoons, and shooting stars.
You asked if I could sing like we did in the ocean, and drowned men.
“How could you possibly know?” I asked.

His eyes glittered, and with a small laugh he said,
“I’m always with you while we are sleeping.”
